With the unwavering support from the electors of New Territories East geographical constituency, I claimed a seat in the 2016 Hong Kong Legislative Council election and was sworn in as the member of the 6th Legislative Council of Hong Kong in October the same year. For the past two years, I have addressed various social and district issues in New Territories East and responded to the local community’s aspirations and needs. I have been vocal about my opinions relating to different policy areas both inside and outside of the Legislative Council.
My first and foremost mission is to improve local people’s livelihood and quality of life. In recent years, the poor management of wet markets and public housing malls has drawn sharp criticism. The Link REIT, which owns and manages a majority of the said shopping facilities, has been adopting controversial business practices to seek maximum income and put profits before people. Many have complained that Link REIT has ignored the affordability and living necessities of residents by driving up rents and evicting small vendors, leaving residents with limited options.
Thus, I put forward a motion on vigorously promoting healthy market competition to counteract the market dominance of Link REIT on 23rd November, 2016, calling for the government to promptly address the lack of welfare facilities and services in different districts, as well as to expeditiously investigate whether Link REIT has violated the Competition Ordinance. The motion was passed with majority support from across the political spectrum.
